Jon Stewart is a Saint - A Tribute

Hey all!

The Daily Show interview on Tuesday, Dec. 9th was frickin' amazing! (If you have not seen it, here it is: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=213349&title=Mike-Huckabee-Pt.-2)
Jon Stewart gave a truly compelling and passionate argument for gay marriage. I think Jon is one of the most caring and intelligent individual EVER! And I love him so much for it!!!
Jon has always been a staunch supporter for equal rights and the well-being of gay people. He shows it not only by expressing it verbally on the Daily Show and during his stand-up routines, but also by the number of openly-gay guests he has come on the show. Not to mention, the GLAAD award he won along with the Daily Show crew in 2005. I say, Jon is a Saint for the gay community! Hooray for Jon!!!! XD

So, here is a tribute to Jon Stewart for his loving support of the gay community. Enjoy! ^_^

First off, from 2007, a little comemorative note from (afterelton.com):

GLAAD's efforts for LGBT History Month have centered around "Friends & Allies", and it would be harder to find a stronger or more fantastically entertaining ally to gay visibility than The Daily Show's Jon Stewart.

--------

A few quotes by Jon Stewart:

* What is the fear of the "gay agenda" that has so upset people? Do people think that if gay people are given a place at the table, they'll be so convincing we'll all end up blowing them? What is the issue? "You know, I'm straight, but you've made such a convincing argument..."
- Stand-up performance at RIT, 2005.

* [Clip of Bush: America needs to conduct this debate on immigration in a reasoned and respectful tone...We cannot build a unified country by inciting people to anger or playing on anyone's fears]
Jon Stewart: "That's what terrorism and gay people are for."

*[Clip of Bush: "America is a free society, which limits the role of government in the lives of our citizens. In this country, people are free to choose how they live their lives."]
Jon Stewart: "And that's why I want to ban gay people from getting married."

* "Recently, the highest court in South Africa handed down a decision ordering the country s parliament to extend marriage rights to all gay couples. So just to reiterate, America is now less progressive than South Africa." --Jon Stewart

* "Some see the move as an attempt to preserve traditional values, while others see it as a cynical ploy to ensure that Vice President Dick Cheney will never have to pay for his gay daughter's wedding." --Jon Stewart, on President Bush's proposal for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage

* Jon Stewart: (In a heated discussion with Bill Bennett concerning gay marriage) Divorce is not caused because 50% of marriages end in gayness.

* "Religion is far more of a choice than homosexuality." -- Jon Stewart, interview with Mike Huckabee

-------

A list of some of the interview with openly-gay guests and conservative guests:

* Interview with Ellen Degeneres. Totally awesome!  The best things: Ellen worships Jon. Jon Stewart was the leader of the Lesbians before Ellen came out. Though, I think he still holds some power. ;-) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=129309&title=Ellen-DeGeneres

* Three interviews with David Rakoff. David Rakoff is probably my favorite re-occuring guest on the Daily Show! He and Jon always have great, informal conversations and David can make Jon giggle so much! :-) (2001) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=106240&title=David-Rakoff, (2005) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=124619&title=David-Rakoff, (2006) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=126435&title=David-Rakoff

* Interview with Sir Ian Mckellen. So Cool! Jon offers to be Mckellen's wife for his Oscars' acceptance speech.  http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=118375&title=Ian-McKellen

* Interview with David Sedaris. Sweet! Jon is a HUGE fan of David Sedaris' work. :-) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=171033&title=David-Sedaris

* Interview with Tim Gunn. Fantastic! Jon watches Project Runway! XD http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=155947&title=Tim-Gunn

* Interview with Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly back in 2002. Awesome! Talks about Rosie and Ellen coming out of the closet - Jon tells Bill why its important to them. Oh, yeah! http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=126361&title=Bill-O'Reilly-2

* Interview with Rick Santorum. Jon tries to reason with Sen. Santorum. Jon wins, I think! ;-) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=110300&title=Senator-Rick-Santorum-Pt.-1

*Interview with Bill Bennet. This is an historic interview in Jon's career! It is amazing! Jon gets seriously defensive, which is great to see! XD
(first part) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=110278&title=Bill-Bennet-Pt.-1, (second part) http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=127075&title=bill-bennet-pt.-2

Only to name a few...

A SHOUT OUT TO JON STEWART: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

This was a fantastic post. I had never seen/read a lot of those quotes before. And the videos you linked to were wonderful -- I had seen the Bill Bennett one and I love it because Jon totally pwns him. And I had never seen the Sir Ian McKellen one, but that was fantastic as well -- so cute when Jon offers to be his wife! XD

Jon really is a saint, and a national treasure. I'm so glad that the GLBT community has such an amazing ally in him.

I love that man. I just, I can't think of another word that accurately describes how I feel when he defends gay marriage like that.

Awesome!
I should be working on my term paper. I also have a final tomorrow morning but I LOVE Sir Ian Mckellen. Magneto for life! LOL But I could not help myself. I had to go through some of those and I just heart Jon even more. Way to stick up for the minorities. And I enjoyed his debate with Mike Huckabee. Great stuff. I had a field day discussing it with some of my fellow American Presidency classmates. Thanks for posting this!

It's great you compiled these. I hate the dark evil pact between Comedy Central and the Comedy Network which means Canadians like myself can't access them. Grrr...

Oh, an additional comment Jon made was about the fight over gays in the military. Anyone else remember it? As I recall it was "to them clearly the only thing worse than a terrorist attack would be a gay hero preventing one".

Dec. 12th, 2008 04:50 am (UTC)
OH SNAP. Way to go, Jon!!!

He also said in his standup, "Why can't we have gays in the military? Personally, I think they're just afraid of a thousand gay guys with M16's going, 'Who'd you call a faggot?'"

Dec. 12th, 2008 04:50 am (UTC)
Oh my gosh, no, I don't remember that one! I've heard him talk about gays in the military before - and they've always been excellent comments - but not that specific one.
Do you remember the year it was? Or anything else specific? I would like to look for that on thedailyshow.com

Thanks for commenting! :-)

There are not words in the english language to describe how much I love Jon Stewart for all this. How passionately he believes in something, and his willingness to defend that belief on the behalf of all the people who's voices aren't heard quite as loudly or reach quite as far as his does -- it's amazing. He's incredible, as is his self-control because I just want to beat the hell out of people like Huckabee.

Thank you for posting this, it's really struck a chord with a lot of people.

Truly beautiful!

It's moments like these (and like the time he sincerely referred to feminism as "a wonderful thing" and pwn3d Newt Gingrich on pro-choice issues) it's all I can do from dropping and worshiping him openly with my mouth.

And *facepalm* I haz a stoopid. You have very kindly listed me as a friend and I did not friend back. I'll warn you, my posts are mopey, stupid, and preachy! *friends* ^_^

A great post, and a great idea to compile all of his pro-gay moments. This was great. =) Also, thanks for the link to the Bill Bennett interview. I think emotionalwench gave me that link ages ago and I never watched it! Sorry, Allison! So, I shall watch it now. =)

LOL, it's cool. You really should watch it though. Jon at his pro-gay best. :D The best thing is how flustered/embarrassed Bennett gets when he sees how badly he's losing the debate.

Watched it, watched it! Oooh, man, I was just smirking the whole time. I know it's kinda like ganging up too but you can tell they know when they're beaten when the audience cheers for Jon! Yeah, it was a fabulous interview. =)

Haha, I do wonder sometimes if I'm a little mean when it comes to how much I love seeing the guests squirm when Jon delivers an especially good zinger of a point. But, then...it's kind of hard for me to feel bad for people who are so obviously bigoted, even if they genuinely think that their convictions are right.

Lol, yeah. But, you're right, when they are so bigoted, it's easy to root against them. :)

Just another wonderful reason to love this guy.

Thanks for all that hard work with this post. The clips were amazing...particularly with Huckabee. I wanted Jon to just smack him upside the head. Jon was at his pro-gay best!

Thank you for sharing those quotes and interviews! Jon Stewart is absolutely my hero. Every time he defends the rights of gay people, my heart soars. It's so encouraging to see such an intelligent, well-spoken, and talented man pwn the politicians and pundits who're attempting to spread ignorance and hatred throughout Western society. It really means so much to me to see how much he cares about this issue.

There was also that wonderful quote shortly after the election, when Prop 8 was passed. There were some clips of various news anchors claiming the ban on gay marriage was partly caused by more black voters coming out to support Obama and voting in favour of Prop 8, and Jon says, in mockery of the blatant hypocrisy, "Free at last! Free at last - whoa, whoa, where are YOU two going?" God I laughed so hard, and again, it just warmed my heart.

This man is amazing! Thank you for this mega awesome post!

Thanks! You are totally right about Jon too! He is such an amzing man and I love him so much for it! :-)

He's a hero of mine as well. :-)

Yes! I liked that quote a lot too! Actually, there are many other quotes I could have put in the post, now that I think about it. Hmm... maybe I should post a part 2 Tribute. ;-P

Thanks for commenting and I'm glad you liked it! ^_^

Go Jon! Yeah, you tell it! :D

I'm a little late here, I just want to say, that the whole No-gay-marry thing is the most stupid, pointless, and most waste of time thing EVER. Why can't gays get married? it's so so so so stupid! I'm not gay, and i agree with Jon 100%. Equal rights are the most important thing.

That was beautiful. I love when Jon gets passionate about something. I remember his first show after 9/11 and I think I cried.
